 Phillip Mann, the President at Oregon Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons

Phillip Mann, DDS, MD


President



Dr. Mann is a Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, having completed a six-year residency program at Oregon Health and Science University, where he also received the MD degree. Prior to that he attended Yale University for his undergraduate degree, and dental school at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine in New York City. Dr. Mann has been in practice in the Portland area since 2015, both in private practice and as an Assistant Professor at OHSU.

He has also volunteered with Free to Smile, a non-profit organization providing cleft lip and palate surgery, for a mission to Guatemala in 2014. A native of New Jersey,

Dr. Mann enjoys his newfound home in Oregon, along with his two children Evelyn and David.

A former Varsity athlete in Heavyweight Rowing, Dr. Mann now enjoys road and mountain biking, running, hiking, and camping throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Dr. Cheng earned his medical and dental degrees at the University of California, San Francisco. After completing his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Cheng finished fellowship training in both Head and Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery. He is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Cheng’s practice is comprised of Oral Surgery (dental extractions, dental implants, bone grafting, soft tissue grafting), Head and Neck Oncology, Head and Neck Reconstruction, Maxillofacial Trauma, and Jaw Alignment (Orthognathic) Surgery. His research interests are focused in the areas of Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Cheng currently serves as the Section Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Legacy Emanuel Hospital and Medical Director of the Legacy Good Samaritan Oral/Head and Neck Cancer Program. He is also an Assistant Professor at the OHSU School of Dentistry in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

When he’s not happily helping patients, Dr. Cheng enjoys spending time with his wife and their two children. When he and his wife are not working, they are constantly looking for child-friendly activities to consume the limitless energy exhibited by their two children.

Dr. Kennedy was raised in eastern Oregon and attended Oregon State University for his undergraduate studies. He graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine.

He completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Dr. Kennedy is a Board Certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon.

Dr. Kennedy has been a contributing author for an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery manual and has given lectures to the dental community. He is a member of the American Dental Association, American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and Western Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is on staff at several local hospitals. He has served on multiple oral surgery missions in developing countries.

Dr. Kennedy met his wife Nicole while growing up in Pendleton, Oregon. They have one son and three daughters. His interests include hunting, snowmobiling, and family activities.

Dr. Michael Doherty earned his Bachelor’s degree from Gonzaga University and his dental degree from the University of North Carolina. Prior to his fourth year of dental school, Dr. Doherty completed an externship with the OMS department at the Oregon Health Sciences University. After dental school, he completed a General Practice Residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. Dr. Doherty gained experience as a general dentist while serving in the U.S. Navy prior to entering OMS residency.

Dr. Doherty completed his Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery training at the National Capital Consortium (National Naval Medical Center/Walter Reed Army Medical Center) in Washington, DC. During training, Dr. Doherty was Chief OMS Resident at the D.C. military hospitals which provided definitive care to many injured sailors, soldiers, and marines. Injuries of such severity are rarely seen in civilian hospitals. Dr. Doherty continually applies knowledge gained from this experience into all aspects of his surgical practice and feels honored to have provided care to such deserving individuals.

Moreover, during OMS residency, Dr. Doherty rotated at multiple hospitals including the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, the University of Miami Ryder Trauma Center, Washington Hospital Center, and the aforementioned training hospitals. This allowed Dr. Doherty to operate with many world experts on various aspects of oral surgery, head and neck pathology, maxillofacial reconstruction, and facial cosmetic surgery.

Prior to leaving military service, Dr. Doherty practiced at Naval Health Clinic Hawaii and was an attending surgeon at the Tripler Army Medical Center OMS Residency program. He trained multiple residents with an emphasis in facial cosmetic surgery, orthognathic surgery, maxillofacial trauma, and dental implantology. In 2009, Dr. Doherty opened Rogue Valley OMS, PC. He maintains a thriving office practice while also providing facial trauma coverage for Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center. He performs surgery in a state-of-the art office, at Asante RRMC, and at the Surgery Center of Southern Oregon.

Dr. Doherty has authored numerous textbook chapters and journal manuscripts and is a recognized lecturer in maxillofacial trauma reconstruction and dental implantology. He provides multiple continuing education courses for Oregon dentists focusing on dental implants, infection control, and medical emergencies.

Dr. Patel earned his dental and medical degrees from New York University. Following his residency training, he completed fellowship training in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery. Dr Patel is board certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and holds a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr. Patel’s practice includes oral surgery (dental extractions, bone grafting, dental implants), surgical oncology (removal of benign and malignant tumors of the head, neck, mouth and throat), facial reconstruction, trauma surgery, sleep apnea surgery, and corrective jaw surgery. He is a fellowship trained Head and Neck Surgical Oncologist and Reconstructive Surgeon dedicated to the treatment of patients with head and neck cancers.. Dr. Patel’s treatment philosophy hinges on comprehensive patient care with a focus on successful cancer treatment while maintaining and restoring quality of life. To Dr. Patel, giving patients back their lives is as important as eliminating cancer. In 2016, he performed the first total jaw reconstruction on the West Coast. Dr. Patel continues to push the envelope and advance the science of surgery through precision medicine, robotic surgery, minimally invasive approaches and patient-specific solutions.

Dr. Patel is proud to be an integral part of the multidisciplinary Providence Head and Neck Cancer Program. He works closely with the clinical team and scientists to offer cutting edge therapies and new approaches to difficult problems.

As the medical director of the Fellowship in Head and Neck Surgery and Reconstructive Microsurgery, Dr. Patel has the privilege of training world-class head and neck surgeons. In addition, he holds academic appointments at Oregon Health and Science University and Washington State University School of Medicine and is active in resident and medical student education.

Dr. Patel lectures nationally and internationally and has published over 60 journal articles, textbook chapters and abstracts. His primary research interests lie in early cancer detection and minimally-invasive facial and oral reconstruction.

Dr. Patel lives in Portland with his wife and two children. He enjoys listening to music,
playing guitar, staying fit, cooking, and exploring the great outdoors with his family.

Dr. Howerton was raised in Portland, Oregon and attended Portland State University for his undergraduate studies. He graduated from Oregon Health & Sciences University School of Dentistry.

He then completed a one year general practice residency at Loma Linda Medical Center. After this he returned to Oregon and completed his Oral & Maxillofacial training at Oregon Health & Sciences University.

Dr. Howerton is a Board Certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon.

Dr. Howerton has published numerous scientific articles and is active in lecturing for the dental community. He became a diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in 1991.

He is active in the Oregon Dental Association. He is a member of the American Dental Association, American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, Western Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the Oregon Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is on staff at several local hospitals and clinics. He is a clinical assistant professor in the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department at Oregon Health & Sciences University in Portland, Oregon.

Dr. Howerton is the proud father of three boys including twins. His interests include basketball, traveling, snow skiing,fly fishing, kayaking, biking, and family activities.

Dr. Tyler Clark is a Portland area native. Though he grew up in Vancouver, WA, he spent much of his youth in and around Portland. Dr. Clark graduated from Brigham Young University, received his DDS from the University of the Pacific in San Francisco and went on to pursue advanced training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Madigan Army Medical Center, Tacoma, WA. He completed his residency in 2011. After fulfilling his Army obligation in 2015, Dr. Clark practiced successfully in a large group setting in Eugene, Oregon and is happy to have now found his way back home to Portland. Dr. Clark is board certified and practices full scope Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. His expertise ranges from wisdom teeth removal, to single tooth extractions, to bone grafting and dental implant placement, to full mouth extractions and rehabilitation with immediate implants and very successful All-on-4 cases. Dr. Clark prides himself on precision and excellence in patient care, and in his professional relationships as a whole. Dr. Clark is known for his gentle, compassionate care, and his ability to put patients at ease.
